Set the Ideal Caster for Better Lateral Grip

Caster angle is critical to a MacPherson strut front suspension because it increases the amount of camber that is gained as steering angle is increased. It also improves the centering torque on the steering wheel for straight line stability and additional tire feedback. The result is better grip mid-corner and an improvement to peak braking by slightly reducing the need for static camber.

Adjustable caster also allows you to adjust the wheel location (side view) to prevent tire rub with the front bumper, or fender in some cases.

Eliminates Bushing Deflection

No More Sloppy Steering and Squishy Brakes

The OEM caster rod bushing is a huge, hydraulic bushing that prioritizes comfort at the expense of performance. Under braking, steering, or acceleration load the bushing will deflect significantly, leading to a rubbery steering and braking feel and an unwanted change in bumpsteer.

Reduces Wheel Hop

Avoids Hammering the Drivetrain

On xDrive models, a hard launch on grippy tires results in the front wheels suddenly loading the caster rod. This results in caster rod bushing deflection which allows the unsprung mass (wheel, tire, etc) to lurch forward. This movement generates inertia (energy) that is poorly dampened, resulting in a rebound force that feeds into the tire and can initiate wheel hop or tire spin.

Eliminates Bushing Bind

Less Bind, More Control

Load transfer under acceleration, braking, or cornering results in the rotation of the caster rod bushing. The OEM bushing generates significant amounts of bushing bind, limiting the droop travel, and acting as a rubber spring, actively resisting suspension movements and releasing that stored energy. Upgrading to a spherical bushing eliminates this bushing bind, and allows the suspension to properly articulate without generating additional unwanted forces.
